Schools in Japan
Children start compulsory education at the age of six.
They must attend school for six years of elementary school and three years of junior high school. Before entering elementary school at the age of six, many children attend daycare centers or kindergartens. High schools, universities, and vocational schools are not part of compulsory education. However, most people go on to high school after graduating from junior high school (98% according to a 2020 Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology survey). In order to enter the school you want, you must pass an entrance exam.Junior High Schools in Japan
Junior high school in Japan is part of compulsory education. It lasts for three years, and students enter at the age of 12. In Japan, the school year starts in April and ends in March. Students who move to Japan or relocate during the school year can start attending school on days other than in April (this is called transferring schools). There are also schools and classrooms that provide special support for children with disabilities.Public Elementary and Junior High Schools are for All Children
In Japan, children enter public schools when they turn six years old (children who are six by April 2). In August of the year before they turn six, a letter (school enrollment guide) is sent to their home from the local municipality where they are registered. Parents must attend the school orientation and pre-enrollment health check-up mentioned in the letter.Tuition at Public Elementary and Junior High Schools is Free
Tuition and textbook costs for public elementary and junior high schools are free. However, parents must pay for school meals and learning materials. In some municipalities, school meal costs are also free.Private Schools Have Entrance Exams and Require Fees
